Recent Safe Neighborhoods Project
For some time
the East Sprague neighborhood has suffered from significant vice and social
problems; however, the neighborhood has recently mounted a concerted effort to
address these issues. The purpose of the grant awarded to the City of Spokane
by the Inland Northwest Community Foundation was to support the East Sprague
business neighborhood in its efforts to improve real and perceived safety by
establishing an ambassador program. Early on, it became apparent that there was
little neighborhood business support for such an initiative necessitating the
pursuit of sustainable and effective alternatives. As such, the purpose of the
present report is to provide an analysis of the neighborhood needs, document
innovative resolutions which have emerged through the efforts of the grant, and
to provide recommendations about how the neighborhood might move forward in
their efforts to improve real and perceived safety within the area. Click on the image to the right to

Biel started in the industry in 1988 and founded Access Telcom in 1993 with the
concept that technology needed to offer a personalized solution to the business
community. With our office located along I-90 in Spokane, Washington, we provide

uniquely positioned to respond quickly and effectively to a wide range of

Hanley started Acme Electric in 1945 performing radio and appliance service. In
1952, seeing that television was the future of home electronics, Acme Electric
became Acme TV. The price of a television in 1952 was almost 1/2 the price of
the average car!
Joined by
his son in the 1970s, two generations of Hanleys began to grow the same
business. Recently joined by a third generation of Hanleys, Heather Hanely,
returned from San Francisco to help grow the Tin Roof, home furnishings
department and has been filling the store with fun, functional, and affordable
pieces, all with a city edge and flair. If you attended the 2003 Parade of Home,
you may have seen her work in Belle Maison, which took second place for Interior
Design.
 Ross Printing Company
Founded in 1917, ROSS is a premier print & packaging provider to the Western
U.S. at the corner of Sprague and Helena. At this location since 1953 --
hit the 90 year mark of doing business in Spokane. Ben Ross co-owner and manager
along with father, Alan Ross.
