the center
The Garland
Business District is located within the North Hill
neighborhood. Garland has retained much of the walkable
neighborhood appeal from the past, with narrow streets,
slow-moving traffic, and stores crammed in every nook
and corner. Best of all, it's a pretty active place
that sports two theatres, a unique collection of retail
stores, restaurants, and an art gallery. This area has
served the neighborhood for over 70 years, with a
wonderful movie theater known as the Garland Theatre
which opened in 1945 and that has all the neon of the
50s and has been recently refurbished. On another corner
is the Milk Bottle restaurant and ice cream parlor,
built in the shape of its name.
The annual
street fair is a throwback to the fifties when most
needs were within a short walk of the front porch. The
event is 'family-friendly' with plenty of games and
activities for the kids, with live music at either end
of the strip.
