Safety Ambassador Program

The City of Spokane, Neighborhood Business Centers (NBC) is pleased to announce it has been awarded a $15,000 grant from the Inland Northwest Community Foundation. The funding will be used to research, develop and begin testing a pilot “Safety Ambassador" program for Spokane's neighborhood business districts in the East Spokane Business Association (ESBA) district on East Sprague.

The project and grant application are a continuation of the Safe Neighborhoods CTED grant work done in 2006. During and since the Safe Neighborhoods project the ESBA and NBC have been working to improve the district’s safety and perceived safety this new opportunity will allow us to explore and test the implementation of an ambassador program, similar to the downtown safety ambassadors at the neighborhood business center level. The City's NBC program will coordinate with Eastern Washington University's Criminal Justice program, Lonnie Schaible to implement this pilot program. Dr. Schaible was employed by the City of Spokane's Police Department, Planning Unit in 2006 and collaborated on the Safe Neighborhoods project and is familiar with the neighborhood business district and its needs.

Project Report - For some time the East Sprague neighborhood has suffered from significant vice and social problems; however, the neighborhood has recently mounted a concerted effort to address these issues.  The purpose of the grant awarded to the City of Spokane by the Inland Northwest Community Foundation was to support the East Sprague business neighborhood in its efforts to improve real and perceived safety by establishing an ambassador program.  Early on, it became apparent that there was little neighborhood business support for such an initiative necessitating the pursuit of sustainable and effective alternatives.  As such, the purpose of the present report is to provide an analysis of the neighborhood needs, document innovative resolutions which have emerged through the efforts of the grant, and to provide recommendations about how the neighborhood might move forward in their efforts to improve real and perceived safety within the area. Safe Neighborhoods

NBC: recently wrapped up its work on the Safe Neighborhoods project in East Central. Safe Neighborhoods planning is a replicable planning process. To being the planning process please contact us, tstripes@spokanecity.org to get copies of all available resources.

Thank you everyone who has dedicated his or her valuable time to the Safe Neighborhoods Pilot Project. Everyone involved had specific expertise they lent to the project’s success, yet to complete this project on the 51/2 month timeline still required tremendous collaboration and work.

  • Ten Things You Can Do To Prevent Graffiti:

  1. Get educated. Learn about graffiti, how it impacts your   community, and who is responsible for graffiti prevention and clean-up in your area.

  2. Report graffiti to the appropriate authorities.

  3. Organize a paint-out. Gather supplies and community volunteers to remove graffiti in your neighborhood.

  4. Plan a paint-brush mural to cover a wall continuously plagued with graffiti.

  5. Coordinate a graffiti awareness campaign at your school or in the community.

  6. Make a presentation on graffiti prevention to your school, class, or neighborhood group.

  7. Adopt a spot in your school or community and make sure it stays clean and free of graffiti.

  8. Plant trees or other greenery near a graffiti-plagued wall. This will help prevent access.

  9. Ask your community to install lighting in areas that are dark and often hit with graffiti.

  10. Contact a local Keep America Beautiful affiliate (www.kab.org) and volunteer to help keep your community clean.
